You Need a Blog

Before you start contacting brands and asking how to get PR packages you really do need to be able to offer them value in return. The best way to provide value is by having a blog. Anyone can set up an Instagram account and start posting their beauty hauls. By having a blog you can offer another level of value to the brand. In fact, some brands will only work with Influencers who have their own blogs.

It’s really easy to set up a blog and it’s extremely cheap to do these days. You can get your own custom domain name and web hosting for as little as £2.50 per month, that’s cheaper than a take-out coffee.

I’ve written a whole blog post about how to start a blog that makes money. If you’ve been considering starting a blog for a while now then give it a read. I cover everything from choosing a profitable niche to how to actually make money blogging. There is also a step-by-step tutorial on setting up a brand new blog and a resource of where to find blog themes suitable for influencers.

You Need Content

You ned to build up a backlog of content before you start contacting brands. If you’ve just set up a new Instagram account or Blog and there’s only 1 or 2 photos on there it really doesn’t look good. You want to fill your feed and your blog with relevant content so that when the brand check out your social media accounts and blog they will easily be able to see what you are about.

You don’t necessarily have to stick to a specific niche but have a few images and blog posts that are beauty-related so the brand can see that it is a topic you cover. If a beauty brand visits your page to check you out after you’ve applied to be on their PR list and all they see is food photos it’s very unlikely that you will be accepted to become an ambassador for them.

Think about what you would want to see if you ran the Beauty PR for Pixi and try and create that on your own account.

You Don’t Need Expensive Equipment

I know people who rush out to buy cameras and tripods when they start blogging but you really don’t need all that. Phone’s these days have amazing cameras that easily create that beautiful blurred background for your images.

What I would highly recommend investing in though is photo editing software. I currently use Lightroom for all my photo editing. I use Lightroom presets on all my images to up the brightness and give them a pop of colour that my phone might not have captured. It also helps give your photos a more cohesive theme. I currently pay a monthly subscription for Lightroom but you can actually use presets with the free version and it’s available on mobile as well which makes editing on the go even easier.

I’ve seen some people charge a fortune for Lightroom Presets but they really don’t have to cost the earth. Some of my favourite presets are by Little Paper Swan and they are super affordable.

Beauty Brand Ambassador

Pixi Beauty aren’t the only beauty brand with a beauty influencer program. There are lots of beauty and skincare brands that are always on the hunt for Influencers and Bloggers to work with. It’s just knowing who’s looking and where to find them.

My Top Tip for finding beauty influencer programmes is to see what other Bloggers and Influencers with a similar following and niche to you are doing. Check out their latest Instagram posts and see if they have mentioned any pr packages or gifted items. It helps you narrow down what brands are actively looking to work with influencers rather than wasting your time chasing ones that don’t do Influencer outreach.

There are lots of places to find brands to work with from Facebook Groups to hashtags on Twitter and dedicated influencer outreach companies. I’ve got a blog post about how I gain blog collaborations daily and in it I’ve listed all the things I used to get brand work as a Blogger.

Influencer marketing has grown massively in the last few years so if you’ve got a blog and quality content then there will always be a brand that would like to work with you.

Pitching to Brands

Most brands require you to pitch them content ideas rather than completing a form on their website to work with them. Pitching is essentially letting a brand know why they should work with you and what you can offer them in return.

I know a lot of people get put off at the idea of pitching but it’s really not as scary or hard as it sounds. I’ve previously written a blog post all about How to Pitch to Brands and what to include in your pitch. Pitching is something that becomes easier with time so the more you pitch to brands the more collaborations you will find yourself getting.

But don’t be disheartened if you don’t hear back. There’s always another brand right around the corner that would love to work with you.

Are there any PR lists you are dying to get on? What makeup brand would be absolute goals for you? I’d absolutely love to work with It Cosmetics! Just putting it out there for the manifestation gods to do their work.

Want to get Paid to work with Brands?

I’ve worked with some of the UK’s most popular brands including Boots, Tempur Mattresses and Yellow Tail. All the campaigns I have worked on have been paid. I only have 5,000 Instagram followers! So it’s never too soon to start quoting your fee. Are you looking to start getting paid by brands? I’ve written a blog post all about making money blogging which I hope you will find helpful. Making the jump from gifted to paid can feel daunting but the sooner you start quoting brands your fee the sooner you will be able to turn your blog into a business.
