How to Make Money Selling on Vinted - Top Tips & Tricks

This year I’ve really made it my mission to be ruthless and have a clear out. I’ve got clothes in my wardrobe from 2017 that I’m never going to wear again so on to someone new they go. I’ve only been properly selling on Vinted since the 15th of January 2023 and in that time I have made £935.95.

Here are some top tips and tricks I’ve picked up in that time to help you make money selling on Vinted.

What is Vinted?

Vinted is an app primarily for selling second-hand clothes and shoes. Other selling categories include kids toys, books, homeware items, games & puzzles and pet care items. Vinted has boomed in popularity in the last few years with sustainability being a hot topic. Also with times being financially harder for so many a lot are turning to Vinted not only to sell but to buy as well.

How to set up a new Vinted account

Downloading & Installing Vinted

Download Vinted from the app store here: (Download for Apple | Download for Android)

You will then need to create a new account by clicking ‘Sign up for Vinted’

Once you have verified your email address you will have full-access to the app

Before you start listing and selling items there are a few things you will need to set up first

Setting up your Profile

First up head to ‘Profile’ in the bottom-right hand corner of the screen.

Scroll down and select ‘Settings’ and then ‘Profile Details’

In this section you can add a profile photo and write a short about me description.

Ideally your about me will be information for buyers rather than information about you.

For example, you might want to include information about the types of items people can expect to find in your shop along with details about days you are able to post.

My profile says: ‘Having a huge clear out. Grab a bargain. Items are posted every weekday morning before 11am.’

Setting up your Payment Information

To add your payment information head to ‘Profile’ > ‘Settings’ > ‘Payments’

To buy and sell on Vinted you will need to connect a bank card as well as a bank account.

A bank card or your Vinted balance will be used when you buy something on the app.

Your bank account details will be used to send your funds to from items you have sold via the app.

Selecting Postage Options

It’s very important you update this section before you start selling on Vinted.

To add your postage options head to ‘Profile’ > ‘Settings’ > ‘Postage’

From the Postage section you will be able to select which postage methods you are happy to use.

I live very close to a Yodel, Evri and Royal Mail drop off so I have selected those postage options for buyers to choose from.

Via the delivery options available on the app you can click a link to find your nearest drop-off point. If you do not live anywhere near an Evri drop-off point for example then make sure to turn this postage option off.

Some shipping options unfortunately cannot be turned off.

From the Postage section you will also be able to add your own shipping address for when you purchase items via the app.

Turning on Bundle Discounts

Head to ‘Profile’ > ‘Bundle Discounts’ to set your bundle discounts

If you are selling large quantities on the app you might want to offer customers a discount if they purchase more than one item from you.

I have bundles discounts set up and these are the discounts I offer:

  • 2 items: 5%
  • 3 items: 10%
  • 5 items: 20%

When someone selects a bundle you will receive a message within the app to confirm you accept the sale of the bundle and to select the new parcel size. If someone has now chosen 5 items from your shop make sure to adjust the parcel size accordingly based on the items they have selected.

I have purchased large postage bags specifically for sending big bundles.

That’s it!

Your profile is now set up and you are ready to start selling on Vinted.

Selling on Vinted

If you’ve finishing setting up your profile you are now ready to start listing items on Vinted. Vinted have one of the easiest selling platforms by far and the whole process of listing an item can take as little as 4 minutes including photography!

Below you will find a step-by-step walkthrough of how I list my items for selling on Vinted:

Photographing your items

My top and most crucial tip for actually selling your items on Vinted is to take good photographs. If the photo of your item doesn’t look great your item isn’t going to sell.

I make sure to open the blinds to let as much natural light into the room as possible. I then take photos of all my clothing items hung on the back of a white door. If I am photographing shoes, toys or accessories I photograph these on white laminate floor.

Here is an example of the photographs I take:

I’d always recommend uploading at least 2 photos for each item you are listing. One to show the item in full and then other photos to highlight key points of the item. This could be the back of a dress if it has a zip or lace-up detailing. I often take a close-up of features like cuffs, buttons, zips or patterns to really showcase the item.

How to list an item

To list an item on Vinted simply tap the ‘Sell’ button at the bottom centre on the app.

This is what the Sell page looks like:

How to list an item for sale on Vinted

Here is how to fill out the page:

  1. Upload your photos of the item (You can upload up to 20 photos)
  2. Write a Title for the item – I always try and include colour, print, style, brand and size in my titles.
  3. Describe your item – Include any extra information about your item. For the dress I added that it had a zip-back fastening and flared sleeves. This would also be where you would include any faults with the item such as marks or missing buttons e.t.c
  4. Category – Vinted will automatically work out which category your item belongs in based on the image and your text. If it has incorrectly categorized your item make sure to select the correct one.
  5. Brand – If you have included the brand name in your Title or Description Vinted will automatically find this in the suggested tab. If not find the brand and select it.
  6. Size – Use the suggested size based on your title and description or select a size from the list.
  7. Condition – Select the condition of your item. If any items are marked, missing parts of damaged in any way you need to make this clear in your listing.
  8. Colours – Select the colour of your item. Stick to just 1 or 2 main colours.
  9. Price – List the item for the price you wish to receive for it. You do not need to include postage or seller fees as these are paid for separately by the buyer. Vinted will give you an idea of what similar items are selling for so you have an idea of what price to expect for the item.
  10. Parcel Size – Select parcel size based on the size of the item. Vinted will give you a guide of which items it recommends for each parcel size.
  11. Finally click ‘Upload’

You have listed your first item on Vinted!

Once you get into the swing of things it’s a really quick process to list new items.

How to pack and ship sold items

Once an item has sold you will receive a message on the Vinted app as well as an email to notify you. (Inbox > Messages)

You will have 5 days to ship the item from when a buyer has paid for it.

Open the sale message on the Vinted app and click ‘Get Shipping Label’

You can either choose to print out the label at home and attach it to your parcel or you can use a digital label that you can print out and attach to the parcel at the drop-off point.

I personally prefer to print out labels at home and attach them to the parcels as I send so many in a day.

I’d always recommended attaching your return address to the rear of the parcel so that if the item goes missing in the post it should find its way back to you.

Pack your parcel up and then take it to the selected drop-off point

Make sure to keep a hold of your delivery confirmation slip that your drop-off point will give you.

You will need to keep this as proof of postage until you have received payment for the purchase, just in case the item goes missing in the post.

Receiving payment for sold items

Once an item is sold the payment will be classed as ‘pending’. You can view this under Profile > Balance Pending Balance.

Your balance will move from pending to available once the buyer has received their item and selected ‘Everything is ok’.

The money will then move into your available balance to withdraw back to your bank account.

Withdrawals from Vinted to your bank account can take up to 5 working days but I normally find the money has landed in my account within 48 hours.

Leaving Feedback

Once the buyer has selected that everything is ok with their item they will be promoted to leave you feedback.

Don’t forget to leave the buyer feedback too. I normally just write ‘Excellent Buyer’ and give them 5 stars if the process went without a hitch.

Feedback is really helpful in giving others confidence to purchase from you.

Sending Offers

When someone favourites your item on Vinted you will have the opportunity to send them an offer.

I do this for every single favourited item and it always helps me sell things faster.

To send an offer head to Inbox > Notifications and select one of the notifications where an item was favourited.

You can then click ‘Make an offer’

How to make an offer on Vinted

You can then suggest a price for the buyer. I normally knock 50p – £1 off depending on the price I have listed the item for.

How to send an offer on Vinted

This will send the offer to the person who favourited that item giving them that little nudge to hit buy.

This is such a great feature for selling on Vinted and has really helped me push more sales.

Accepting Offers

Buyers can send offers to sellers too. If someone has sent you an offer you can find it under Inbox > Messages.

It’s up to you whether you accept the offer or not.

You can always decline the offer if you think it was too cheeky and send a counter offer back.

If an item has had a lot of favourites in a short space of time I’d just sit and wait for the full asking price. The more favourites an item has the more likely it is someone will purchase for the price listed without trying to knock you down.

Sending Messages

I recently took part in a mini challenge to see if I could make over £100 on Vinted in 3 days. You can see my results on Instagram here. I was struggling to make the sales come in until I started messaging people who had already favourited my items. I simply messaged them letting them know I was doing a post run in the morning and asked if they were still interested in the item. This worked a treat and the sales started rolling in.

If you want some quick sales I’d highly recommend sending offers as well as messages to everyone that has favourited your items.

Promoting your items

Vinted have a number of extra paid features like ‘Spotlight your wardrobe’, ‘Bump an item’ and ‘Showcase an item’. Personally I don’t think any of these features are worth spending money on unless you are selling very high-priced items or are selling items on mass.

It’s just going to eat into your profit.

Item has lots of favourites on Vinted but no sales

If you have an item with lots of favourites that still isn’t selling you can try reducing the price slightly.

Whenever you reduce the price of an item that is listed on Vinted, anyone who has favourited that item will receive a notification.

Vinted Reduced Price Notification

This is a great way to remind people the item is still there and available to purchase and might spur somebody on to buy it now that the price has dropped.

Top Tips & Tricks

Here is a reminder of some of the top tips and tricks to get your items selling on Vinted.

Good Photography

If your items aren’t selling consider retaking some photos and uploading fresh ones to your listing. Photos taken against a white background in natural sunlight do the best.

List the price a little higher

If you want £3 for an item list it at £4. That way when someone favourites your item you can send them an offer for £3 and bag that sale quicker. It also gives you room to reduce the price if the views and favourites aren’t coming in.

Add a return address to your parcels

Make sure all the parcels you are sending have your return address on the back. If for whatever reason your buyer fails to collect the parcel in time it will automatically be sent back to you.

List regularly

I find a lot of my sales happen when I’ve just listed new items. Sales will start coming in for items that I listed a few weeks prior as more eyes are on my profile again. Don’t overwhelm yourself with listings though. I find uploading 10 items every weekend works well for me.

Commonly Asked Questions

What are the fees for selling on Vinted?

There aren’t any! Selling fees on Vinted are paid for by the buyer. So when you list an item for £4, you get the full £4 for that item with no deductions.

How does postage work on Vinted?

One of my favourite things about Vinted is that you don’t need to work postage fees into your items sale price. When a buyer purchases an item from you they select the postage option and pay for it during the checkout process. All you have to do then is either print a label or use the digital label method when you drop your item to the chosen drop-off point.

A buyer has messaged to say they haven’t been charged postage. Why is this?

To help kick-off your Vinted selling journey a buyer can receive free postage with Evri if they are your first customer. This doesn’t cost you anything and is covered by Vinted. It’s just a great perk for the buyer and a chance for you to start building up some seller reviews.

How long does it take to get paid by Vinted?

Once you have posted an item to a buyer there’s a bit of a wait. The buyer needs to receive the item and then confirm via the Vinted app that they are happy with what they have received. Your pending funds will then be moved to your balance to withdraw from the app. Withdrawal requests can take up to 5 working days to hit your bank account but it’s normally much quicker than that.

What happens if the buyer doesn’t click that everything is ok?

From receiving the parcel the buyer has 48 hours to click that everything is ok or make a dispute. If the buyer hasn’t clicked anything Vinted will automatically acknowledge the successful purchase after the 48 hours has elapsed.

What if there is a dispute?

If a buyer is unhappy with their purchase then your funds will be held until there is a resolution. This is frustrating so it’s important you communicate with the buyer to resolve the issue. If the issue is with the delivery and a parcel has been lost then Vinted will step in to help resolve the problem.

Why does my Vinted app keep changing language?

Unfortunately it’s a common glitch with the Vinted app. To get your app back to English you will need to force stop the app and then reopen it.

Do I need to send messages to buyers?

No you don’t need to. You might want to pop them a message to say an item is on the way or if you will be delayed posting the item. Most of my sales on the app I’ve had no communication with the buyer at all.

How do I turn on holiday mode?

If you are going away and will be unable to post sold items you will need to turn on holiday mode. To do this click ‘Profile’ > ‘Holiday mode’ > ‘Hide my items’. You can turn this off when you return from holiday.

Is Vinted safe to use?

Absolutely! I’ve sold and bought numerous items now on Vinted and have only encountered one very minor problem. This was resolved quickly by Vinted and both myself and the buyer were not out of pocket because of it.

Is Vinted better than eBay and Depop?

I’ve sold on all 3 platforms and I definitely prefer selling on Vinted now in comparison to Depop and eBay. It really is miles ahead in terms of usability and ease for both sellers and buyers.

Got any questions I’ve not answered?

If you’ve got a question that’s not been answered you can ask away in the comments and I will get it added to this section.
