User Interviews has swiftly become one of my favourite market research study websites. I managed to make $150 on the website in just 1 week and for a total of 3 hours 30 minutes of my time. That works out at just over $42 an hour. Even though their payments are listed in dollars the website is very much for UK residents. Read on to find out more information about how User Interviews works and how I made $150 on the site in just one week.

What is User Interviews?

User Interviews is a market research recruiting platform that connects brands and companies carrying out research with participants. For example, Nike might be looking for people that are just getting into running and require people to give feedback on a prototype of a new trainer they are looking to launch. Nike will register their focus group with User Interviews and then participants on User Interviews can apply to take part in the upcoming study with Nike in return for a cash incentive.

Types of Studies

There are 4 different types of studies you may be asked to take part in:

• Interviews
• Focus Groups
• Multi-Day Studies
• Unmoderated Tasks

Interviews

Interviews are often just 1-1 studies with you and the researcher. More often than not these are conducted via a video-calling platform like Zoom or Skype. Sometimes these interviews might take place in person or over the phone but this is very rare.

Focus Groups

Focus Groups are similar to Interviews but instead of it just being you and the researcher there will be other participants present as well. These studies are often held via Zoom and everyone will be required to participate evenly throughout the study.

Multi Day Studies

Multi-Day Studies are studies that run for an extended period of time. This could be a few days or even weeks/months. You will often be asked to complete small tasks and record videos of yourself daily on the research topic and upload them to a platform or app.

Unmoderated Tasks

Unmoderated tasks require you to record yourself answering questions that have been set by the researcher. There will be no researcher interacting with you so you will need to be confident that you can give lengthy answers to often short questions.

How do I become a User Interviews participant?

It’s really quick and easy to sign up to User Interviews. Click here to apply to become a participant. You will then need to fill out a basic profile about yourself. Questions include where you live, household income, where you work e.t.c The more information you provide the higher the chance of you being linked to relevant studies.

How to apply for studies

When you sign in to your User Interviews account click the tab ‘Browse Studies’ to view all current studies.

Each study will provide information on:

• A description of what the researcher is looking for
• The time the study will take
• The date or dates the study is taking place
• Device requirements (Smartphone, Desktop with webcam e.t.c)
• Payment amount for the study and what format payment will be made in (Cash or Gift Cards)
• The type of study (Interview, Focus Group, Multi Day, Unmoderated)

You can then decide if the study is the right fit for you and if you would like to apply for it. If you do just click ‘Apply to participate’

You may then be required to answer a few screener survey questions just to check you are the type of participant the researcher is looking for.

If you are successful you will receive an email from User Interviews with the next steps on how to take part. Studies that you are due to take part in or have previously taken part in can be viewed under ‘My Studies’.

Once you have completed the study the payment will be made via the method stated.

How are payments made?

Some studies pay in cash and others pay in gift cards. You will need to check the method of payment for each study you apply to.

After a study is completed payments are made very quickly via User Interviews. You will receive an email to let you know the payment has been made and how to claim it. The longest I have waited for payment was 4 days whilst the researcher signed off on my participation.

How much money can I make on User Interviews?

Studies vary greatly in payment depending on how niche the research topic is and what is required of the participant. The lowest amount I’ve been paid was $10 for a 10-minute unmoderated task. The highest amount I’ve been paid so far is $60 for a 2-hour focus group. The highest amount I’ve seen available so far was $250 for a 45-minute interview.

How often do new studies become available?

New studies are launched every day. You won’t always get an email to let you know when a new study becomes available. I’d highly recommend keeping User Interviews open in a tab on your mobile phone or computer and checking the ‘Browse Studies’ section a few times a day.

Do I need to link my Facebook and LinkedIn to User Interviews?

When you sign up User Interviews will prompt you to connect both your Facebook and LinkedIn profiles in the promise of getting paired with more studies. I haven’t linked either of my accounts and have still managed to be paired with a number of studies. It’s definitely personal preference if you would like to do this or not but it is not compulsory.

Can I do these studies alongside a job?

Absolutely! Not all research studies are conducted in working hours. Some happen over weekends and in the evenings so it can definitely work around a job.

How do I increase my chances of getting picked?

The more studies you apply for the better your chance of getting picked for one. Once you have completed your first study with User Interviews the researcher will be contacted and asked to give feedback on how you did. If you get good feedback you will increase your chances of getting picked for further studies.
